Day 15: Plugging away...

Friday, November 6

Workout: Five rounds of 20 back extensions and 10 squat thrusts

I remember the first time I watched Full Metal Jacket...you know the sequence when they're in basic, and Pvt. Pyle keeps screwing up and causing the entire platoon to get punished? There's one shot in that sequence where the whole platoon is doing squat thrusts while Pyle sits on a wall sucking his thumb...and I remember thinking, "That doesn't look that difficult. I wonder how many of those they have to do..." Wellllllllll, today was the first time I tried squat thrusts, and I totally understand why they're used as punishment. They suck. Like, reeeeeeeally suck. I finished working out almost four hours ago and my chest is still burning, my legs are like jello and there's all these weird little mini-spasms happening in my hamstrings every so often. And my lower back is yelling at me for all the extensions. I don't think it's going to be speaking to me for a while.

Sunday, November 8

Workout: Two circuits of the following @ 20 sec high intensity intervals, 10 sec rest between - 4 sets of leg press; 4 sets of lat pulldowns; 4 sets of chest press.

I had to work on Saturday, then go to the grocery store, then head to a housewarming party to watch Penn State get their asses handed to them. So, I decided to go ahead and work out in the gym in my building on Sunday. Hooo boy...ten seconds is not enough rest when you're going high intensity. My left biceps tendon hurt for days after this.

Monday, November 9

Workout: Four sets of 25 body weight squats

Really unmotivated Monday morning. Was one of those "come on, at least do something" workouts. Not terribly happy about it, but something got done.

Wednesday, November 11

Workout: Four rounds of 25 situps, 20 lunges and 10 pushups...very little rest between each

My arms still hurt from Sunday's workout, so thankfully, this one was mostly core and lower body. Had to push myself on this one...feeling great this morning!

Moment of Truth

Weight: 286
Net Change: -3

I was reeeeeeeeeally not disciplined with my eating this week, but I'm still down three pounds...not like that's a lot on my frame, but you gotta start somewhere.

Day 8: Teh soreness. I has it.

Friday, October 30

Workout: Five rounds of 20 body weight squats and 10 back extensions

Wow. Pushing close to three bills 100 times when your legs are already sore from a couple of days ago is fun. Can't think of a more excruciating way to spend 20 minutes at 5:30 in the morning. Damn, a long shower never felt so good, even if it wasn't easy to stand up in there. Needless to say, stairs are going to be my undoing for a few days. Still have good soreness in the chest and triceps from pushups on Wednesday. I like where this is going already.

Saturday, October 31

Workout: Six rounds of 20 lunges and 10 pushups (Tabata timer: 20 sec of work, 10 sec of rest)

Very nearly had a meltdown today when I thought I'd go down to the gym and do some of my workout there. Too many mirrors, too many other people...got really self-concious, so I came back up to the apartment and did this while watching football. Legs very sore after...

Monday, November 2

Workout: Tabata timer; 20 sec of high intensity pushups, 10 sec of rest, 20 sec of high intensity situps, 10 sec of rest; for ten minutes

Yeeeeeeeeeeowch. Figured I'd give my legs a rest, but damn, the upper body feels like jello.

Wednesday, November 4

Workout:
Five rounds of 20 squats and 20, errrrr, 10 pushups

Got ambitious today. After the first round of 20 pushups, I decided that doing 20 each round would be counter productive, as I wouldn't be able to lift my arms to get to my computer today...ended up doing one set of 20, then the remainder of 10. Still got in 100 squats though.

Moment of truth
Weight: 287
Net change: -2 lb.

"They" say that losing two pounds per week is healthy. Whatever, man. Two pounds is two pounds. Not bad for the first week.

Day 1: It Begins...

Wednesday 10/28/09

Weight: 289
Workout: five rounds of 10 pushups and 10 lunges

I woke up this morning at 5:30, about 15 minutes before my alarm was due to go off. For some reason, when I wake up, I'm up. So I laid there, the 'Rita dozing peacefully beside me, and my eyes were wide open...I stared at the ceiling for about five minutes, when I decided to get up off my fat ass and start this odyssey.

I've been meaning to get started with this thing for quite a while. I just don't look good these days. I made an offhand comment to a friend yesterday along the lines of "I'm tired because I'm old and fat." Her response was, "You're not old." I'm sure she didn't mean anything by it, but it just reinforces what I've been feeling the past couple of years. Well, enough is enough. I've got a beach vacation next August, and goddammit, I'm gonna look good without a shirt when I go. This is a way for me to keep a log of how I'm working out, what I'm eating, all of that. I know all the studies say that those who keep a faithful log of foods and workouts are like four million percent more successful losing weight, so this is my way of doing it. Gonna need your help to keep me motivated.

Okay, so maybe the workout doesn't seem like much. Consider that I haven't done a lick of exercise, apart from a few long walks and my normal commute walks since just before St. Patrick's Day when I ran an 8k. And even then, directly after the 8k, my friends and I went out and got NASCAR drunk, negating any real benefit that the weeks of training might have given me. So I busted out 50 pushups and 50 lunges this morning. Consider also that my muscles shrank and my gut blew up, so I'm pushing more with less. The whole thing took about ten minutes, but it was tough, so fuck you. It will get easier. I'll try to post an entry here every Wednesday with my workouts and weight. My plan is to do one of these insane crossfit workouts four times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings; Saturday afternoons), and I've decided my weigh-in day will be Wednesday.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Consider that step taken. As John Landis would say, See You Next Wednesday.
